Donovan expects to be left out of U.S. World Cup squad

MIAMI (Reuters) - Landon Donovan has resigned himself to being left out of the United States squad for next month's block of World Cup qualifiers, but remains hopeful he can make it to Brazil next year if the team qualifies.

Donovan told Reuters before the squad was due to be announced on Thursday that he was not expecting his name to be included on the playing list.

"As far as I know, I will not be on the roster and that's disappointing," he told Reuters in an interview during his campaign with The Skin Cancer Foundation to promote awareness of the disease.

"But I certainly understand it, I've been gone for a long time. I basically excused myself from the first three so I understand the way the world works."

Despite being the U.S's all-time leading goalscorer, Donovan's omission from the squad for two friendlies and three World Cup qualifiers, against Jamaica, Panama and Honduras, was largely expected.

The 31-year-old missed the team's earlier qualifiers this year after taking a self-imposed break from the game. He only resumed playing in late March and national coach Juergen Klinsmann said he would have to fight his way back in like everyone else.

"I'm disappointed that I'm not (selected) but I'll keep going and I'll keep working hard and I hope that I get the chance," he said.

"I would love to be in Brazil next year but I can't completely control that. My job is to make it as difficult as possible for the coach to leave me out."

Oscar rivals Spielberg, Lee reunited at Cannes

CANNES, France (AP) ? Asked about their recent history as Oscar rivals, Steven Spielberg and Ang Lee look at each other hesitantly before Spielberg graciously offers, "After you."

The two have come to the Cannes Film Festival just months after facing off as the two favorites for best director at the Academy Awards. In February, Lee won the Oscar many expected to go to Spielberg for his Civil War epic "Lincoln."

But it was the Taiwan-born Lee, who had previously won the award for "Brokeback Mountain," who won for his 3-D shipwreck saga "Life of Pi."

At Cannes, though, Spielberg is something like Lee's boss. He's president of the nine-person jury that Lee is also sitting on. They, along with other jurors including Nicole Kidman and Christoph Waltz, will select the Palme d'Or winner ? arguably the only honor on par with an Oscar ? from the 20 films in competition at the French Riviera festival.

On Wednesday, speaking to reporters, the two evidenced no ill will from a hard-fought Oscar season. Lee said the two are good friends and called Spielberg "my hero."

"I worship him," Lee said. "I don't know how he looks at me, but I worship him. I don't think any result will change how I feel about him or even about myself."

Spielberg responded with his own compliments of Lee.

"Ang and I have known each other for a long time and we've never, ever been competitors," said Spielberg. "We've always been colleagues."

"I worship 'Life of Pi,' therefore I worship Ang Lee," the director added. "You are what you do. You are what you eat. You are what you shoot."

Fresh off the Academy Awards, Spielberg and Lee compared the Oscars with Cannes ? the two most elite platforms for movies. Lee called Cannes "more high-brow" and "more auteur-oriented," while the Academy Awards, he said, can be more of a popularity contest about "how the wind blows."

The international jury also includes Romanian director Cristian Mungiu, Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsay, Japanese director Naomi Kawase, French actor Daniel Auteuil and Bollywood star Vidya Balan. Over the next 12 days, the group will screen the in-competition films at Cannes and deliberate on their favorite.

Spielberg also expressed preference for the Cannes process, lamenting the months-long Oscar race that he compared to "a political cycle."

"There's no campaigning here," Spielberg said, "and that is a breath of fresh air for me."

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is hosting a Family Fishing Event Saturday, May 18 from 8:30-2 at Eckman Lake in Waldport. This event is organized and sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Waldport and is a great opportunity to take your family fishing.

This event is part of the ODFW Outdoors program and is designed to introduce young people and their families to the sport of trout fishing. The department will loan out rods, reels, and tackle to individuals who are learning to fish or do not have their own gear. Participants are welcome to bring their own equipment if they prefer. The department will also provide bait.

The Family Fishing event is free and open to the public. ODFW staff and volunteers will be on hand to help participants learn how to bait the hook, cast the rod and land the fish. Volunteers will even help clean the catch and teach participants about fish anatomy and physiology.

Eckman Lake is located 2.5 miles east of Waldport on Highway 34. The family fishing area will be set-up at the Nelson Wayside State Park across from the church parking lot.

Recruiting young anglers through events like the upcoming Family Fishing event at Eckman Lake has been identified as a top priority in ODFW?s 25-Year Angling Enhancement Plan. The plan lays out strategies, actions and pilot projects that ODFW will take to enhance recreational fishing opportunities in Oregon in the years ahead.

Under the 2013 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations, anglers aged 13 and under do not need a fishing license, while those 14-17 must possess a Juvenile Angling License, which can be purchased from any ODFW office or license agent for $9. Licenses will not be sold at the Family Fishing event so those who need them should plan to purchase them ahead of time.

U.S. oil boom leaves OPEC sidelined from demand growth

LONDON (Reuters) - Rising U.S. shale oil production will help meet most of the world's new oil demand in the next five years, even if the global economy picks up steam, leaving little room for OPEC to lift output without risking lower prices, the West's energy agency said.

The prediction by the International Energy Agency (IEA) came in its closely watched semi-annual report, which analyses mid-term global oil supply and demand trends.

"North America has set off a supply shock that is sending ripples throughout the world," IEA Executive Director Maria van der Hoeven said on Tuesday.

"The good news is that this is helping to ease a market that was relatively tight for several years," she added. Oil on Tuesday traded near $103 a barrel, well below its peak of $147 in 2008.

The IEA said it expected global demand to rise 8 percent on aggregate between 2012 and 2018 to reach 96.7 million barrels per day (bpd) based on a fairly optimistic assumption by the International Monetary Fund of 3 to 4.5 percent global economic growth a year during the period.

That incremental demand will be met mainly by non-OPEC production, which will rise by more than 10 percent between 2012 and 2018 to 59.31 million bpd, the IEA said, increasing its estimate of non-OPEC supply in 2017 by 1 million bpd versus its previous report in October 2012.

The United States will overtake Russia as the world's largest non-OPEC producer as early as 2015, the IEA said.

That may leave OPEC, which had been long seen as the last resort for the world to meet rising demand, with output fluctuating around the current levels of 30 million bpd for the next five years.

The agency cut its estimate of the demand for OPEC crude in 2017 to 29.99 million bpd, down by 1.22 million bpd from its previous report six months ago.

It said OPEC's spare capacity will rise by over a quarter to reach 6.4 million bpd or 6.6 percent of global demand, giving an additional cushion to potential supply shocks, the report said.

The adoption of U.S. shale technology could help Russia and China boost production from unconventional reserves, but new projects may slow in other areas.

"Several members of the (OPEC) producer group face new hurdles, notably in North and sub-Saharan Africa. The regional fallout from the 'Arab Spring' is taking a toll on investment and capacity growth," the IEA said.

"Downward adjustments across the (OPEC) group are partly offset by substantially stronger growth in Saudi capacity than previously expected, reflecting newly announced development projects," it added.

Iran's sustainable crude production capacity is likely to fall by as much as 1 million bpd to 2.38 million bpd by 2018, the lowest in many decades, due to Western sanctions, the IEA said.

EUROPEAN REFINERS AT RISK

The IEA said the balance of global supply growth, until recently evenly split between OPEC and non-OPEC, was tilting towards the latter.

"North America thus increases its share of supply growth both within the non-OPEC group and more globally," it added.

In every other aspect of the supply chain, be it demand, refining, trade or storage and transportation, the fast rise of emerging market and developing economies is striking, it said.

These economies are projected to overtake advanced economies in oil product consumption from the second quarter of 2013. This lead will widen from 49 percent of global demand in 2012 to more than 54 percent by 2018.

The IEA said that beyond the well known story of growth in Brazil, China, Russia, India, Saudi Arabia and South Africa, many African nations were also on the rise on the global oil consumption map.

The IEA also predicted shifts in the global refining industry as countries such as India and Saudi Arabia build new refining capacity.

The expansion of global refining capacity will outpace upstream supply growth as well as demand growth, bringing refining margins under pressure. Higher-cost refineries will face stronger competition.

"European refineries are at particularly high risk of closure over the forecast period," the IEA said.

The IEA added that another consequence of the surge in U.S. production was a shift in natural gas pricing, which would challenging the conventional wisdom that products produced from oil will continue to dominate the market for transport fuels.

"Cheap and abundant natural gas has already facilitated the transition of the U.S. economy towards broader use of the fuel," the agency said. Natural gas will increase its share of road transport fuels to 2.5 percent in 2018 from 1.4 percent in 2010, it forecast.

Justice investigating IRS targeting of tea party

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Justice Department is opening a criminal investigation of the Internal Revenue Service just as another probe concludes that lax management enabled agents to improperly target tea party groups for extra scrutiny when they applied for tax exempt status.

Attorney General Eric Holder said he ordered the FBI to investigate Friday ? the day the IRS publicly acknowledged that it had singled out conservative groups.

Holder says the IRS actions were "outrageous and unacceptable." Holder says now his agency must determine if there were criminal violations.

Holder is scheduled to testify Wednesday before the House Judiciary Committee.

Billy Crystal returns to Broadway with 1-man show

NEW YORK (AP) ? There are apparently a few more Sundays left in Billy Crystal.

The star of "City Slickers" and "When Harry Met Sally" said Tuesday he will reprise his funny and poignant one-man autobiographical show "700 Sundays" on Broadway for a 9-week stand this fall.

"700 Sundays" was a Broadway success during the 2004-2005 season, playing to sold-out houses and winning a Tony Award for special theatrical experience. Crystal took it on the road, both in America and abroad.

Previews of its return engagement will begin Nov. 5 at the Imperial Theatre, with an opening night set for Nov. 13. The final performance is scheduled for Jan. 5.

In a statement, the New York-bred Crystal said the show ? which makes its first return to New York since its Broadway debut ? will mark its final performances.

"I've now decided to tell this story one last time in my own backyard, where it all took place," he said. "It is a privilege to return to Broadway to say goodbye to one of the greatest thrills of my life."

Loss triggers the stories in "700 Sundays," the centerpiece being the death of Crystal's father, Jack, who died of a heart attack at age 54 when his son, Billy, was 15.

The show's title comes from a calculation by Crystal that father and son spent that many Sundays together before Jack Crystal died. Sunday was the one day of the week the two had to enjoy each other's company since Jack Crystal always held two or three jobs.

Other relatives from Crystal's suburban Long Island childhood pop up, too, in "700 Sundays": Uncle Milt, who founded the legendary Commodore Records; Uncle Berns and Aunt Sheila, among others.

The show, written with good friend Alan Zweibel, will also feature its original director, Des McAnuff. It became the highest grossing nonmusical in Broadway's history.

In 2009, Crystal reprised the show with engagements in six major cities, including Philadelphia, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta and Washington, D.C. The work was also turned into a book.

Crystal forged his comedy career in such diverse television shows as "Soap" and "Saturday Night Live," and movies such as " Deconstructing Harry" and "Analyze This" as well as gigs on the Academy Awards.
