Trout's monster game helps Angels rout Tigers

DETROIT (AP) - Earlier this week, Mike Trout had a chance to meet Al Kaline, the Hall of Famer who played for the Detroit Tigers and won a batting title in 1955 when he was 20 years old.

After another four-hit night, Trout looks like he's on his way to a similar feat.

Trout raised his American League-leading average to .355 on Tuesday night with the fourth four-hit game of his spectacular rookie season. His 430-foot shot in the second inning was the second of five Los Angeles homers, and the Angels went on to rout the Tigers 13-0.

Trout, who turns 21 next month, said he met Kaline on Monday.

"My mom lived in Michigan. She was a big fan of him growing up," Trout said. "That was pretty neat meeting him."

Trout, Mark Trumbo and Albert Pujols all homered off Jacob Turner in the first two innings, and Alberto Callaspo and Kendrys Morales went deep later in the game. The Tigers were shut out for the first time in 159 games, a franchise-record streak that began last July 17 - exactly a year earlier to the day.

Garrett Richards (3-1) allowed three hits in seven innings, easily outdueling Turner (0-1) in a matchup of top pitching prospects. The Detroit right-hander lasted only two innings, giving up seven runs and six hits on a 100-degree night.

"Jacob is a potential top-of-the-rotation guy who just needs more seasoning," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "I still expect to see him high in a rotation someday, but he's not ready yet."

The Angels lead the major leagues with 14 shutouts.

Pujols opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first, and Trumbo followed with his 26th homer of the year, a three-run shot. Trout's two-run homer in the second was the most impressive - an opposite-field drive to right-center that made it 6-0.

"It felt good off the bat," Trout said. "I was running pretty hard, because it's a big park."

Pujols added a solo shot in the second.

Trout now has 100 hits this season in 69 games. He entered the day with a 20-point lead over Joe Mauer in the AL batting race.

Pujols and Howard Kendrick had three hits each. Trumbo has six homers in his last eight games.

Detroit needed to send Turner to the mound because of an injury to fellow rookie Drew Smyly. Leyland talked a bit before the game about the challenges young pitchers face when they have to learn on the job at the major league level.

The 21-year-old Turner was recalled from the minors before the game to make his fifth career start, and he was in trouble from the beginning in a game that began amid triple-digit heat.

Trumbo's homer went an estimated 415 feet to left. Trout's was even longer, landing in the outfield seats and bouncing up onto a concourse above Sparky Anderson's retired No. 11.

Trumbo playfully disputed the estimated distances of the homers, which put Trout's farther than his by 15 feet.

"That didn't go farther," he said. "Conspiracy. League-wide conspiracy. You've got to hit it to the middle of the field, I'm convinced now."

Pujols' homer was the 461st of his career, tying Chipper Jones for 33rd on the career list.

The Angels put their leadoff man on in each of the first six innings. Morales drove in another run in the sixth with a single, and Callaspo's three-run homer later that inning made it 11-0.

In the bottom half, Detroit's Miguel Cabrera hit a line drive to right, but Torii Hunter made a diving catch. Richards, who is three years older than Turner, walked four but pitched comfortably with a big lead.

Morales hit a solo homer in the eighth, and Peter Bourjos hit an RBI double in the ninth.

NOTES: Detroit's Doug Fister (3-6) takes the mound against C.J. Wilson (9-5) of the Angels on Wednesday night. ... Angels RHP Dan Haren (lower back stiffness) made a rehab start Monday night, pitching five innings for Class A Inland Empire. OF Vernon Wells (right thumb surgery) is expected to start a rehab assignment this weekend. ... Trout's homer was his 13th of the year. Pujols' was his 16th. ... Detroit's Austin Jackson had his streak of 13 games with a run snapped. ... Detroit's last game without a run was last July 16, a 5-0 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

Clinton to Myanmar: Keep up the reforms

Though media laws have been relaxed in Myanmar, reporting on politics or sensitive subjects like ethnic unrest are still subject to censorship.

In the past two years, Western nations have seen the new Myanmar president, Thein Sein, usher in a number of reforms, such as allowing an opposition leader, who has spent much of the past 15 years under house arrest, into the Parliament; the release of several hundred political prisoners; and the relaxing of censorship laws, leading to massive rollbacks of international sanctions.?

However, activists are quick to point out that Myanmar has a long way to go and cite the unrest in the Rakhine state in the west as perhaps as big a test for Myanmar's media as it is for its government. Though media laws have been relaxed, and the government has promised further loosening of restrictions, news media reporting on politics or sensitive subjects like ethnic unrest are still subject to censorship, as shown by the court cases against the weekly journal The Snap Shot, and another weekly publication, The Modern.

?Until now, the government has been relaxing its abusive control of the media but, as it does not know how to assist the media in the new, rapidly emerging political and economic environment ? and has initiated at least three prosecutions since the start of the year,? Reporters Without Borders said in a recent statement.

Ethnic and sectarian violence that left more than 60 dead broke out in Rakhine state last month after news spread that a Buddhist woman was raped and killed by three ethnic Rohingya Muslims.

State newspapers highlighted the ethnicity and religion of both the rape and murder victim and the suspects, who were later convicted, using an ethnic slur to refer to the men accused of the crime.

The ministry of information, responsible for controlling the press and publishing state sanctioned news, reacted by indefinitely postponing the lifting of the country-wide practice of pre-screening news copy, initially planned for June 30. It claimed private media had incited violence.

The government accused Myat Khaing, editor of Snap Shot, of defamation with the intent of inciting violence, which carries a sentence of up to seven years. The private weekly journal published an image of the victim?s corpse.

?We are facing unjust British laws,? Mr. Myat Khaing?s lawyer told reporters outside the court last week. ?The reports in question simply repeated information that had already appeared in state media and on the Internet, and appeared after demonstrations had already occurred.?

The case is scheduled to continue next week.

?Conflict in Rakhine state has shone a harsh light on the sensitivity of the media environment and the very fragile nature of the newly recovered, but partial media freedom,? said Reporters Without Borders in a statement.

Myanmar's judiciary still lacks independence, and enforces antiquated and confusing laws drafted in the colonial era that have been amended and changed by several different military governments to support authoritarian rule since 1962.

In an impromptu press conference yesterday, Aung San Suu Kyi stressed the importance of an independent judiciary and rule of law.

?Courts in Myanmar are a tool of the government,? says Nyan Win, legal adviser of Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi?s party, the National League for Democracy, pointing out that many rulings are pre-determined, and rarely based on evidence. He says judges still make decisions based on directives handed down from the military.

From babies to teens: 5 car seat safety tips worth knowing ...

I?m a stickler when it comes to car seat safety. I figure, we?re in the car for so many hours out of our days, it?s best to be up to date on the latest safety recommendations.

These are the top 5 tips I tell parents daily. A little preparation upfront and you can rest assured that you?re doing your best to keep your children as safe as possible in the event of a car accident.

And with all the summer travel we do, now is the perfect time to brush up, re-evaluate, and maximize car seat safety for your family.

1.? Keep your baby/toddler rear-facing as long as possible. Preferably, until at least 2 years old. Once your baby outgrows her infant car seat, she can graduate to a convertible car seat (one that can rear and forward face). And don?t worry, it?s perfectly fine for her to sit frog-legged back there.

2.? Keep your child in a 5 point harness for as long as possible. So, your child is 4 years old and weighs more than 4o pounds? No need to rush to the booster. My 7 year old son is still in a 5 point harness. I kid you not. Seriously, they make 5 point harnessed car seats that accommodate up to 80 pounds. As long as your child is within the height and weight limit of his 5 point harness, it really is the safer way to travel. Sure, he?s received some peer flak for it during car pools, but we shrug and laugh it off.

Safety is more important.

3.? The LATCH system has a weight limit. This is something that not many parents are aware of. The combination of your child?s weight plus the weight of your car seat should not exceed 65 pounds. If you?re unsure about the weight of your car seat, switch to the seat belt to secure the car seat if your child weighs more than 40 pounds.

4.? Don?t rush out of a booster. Once your child is ready for a booster, keep her there until she?s 4 feet 9 inches. This is to ensure that the seat belt fits your child properly and that it?s not riding across her neck or above her hips. Do this 5 step test to see if your child is ready to move out of her booster. This could be anywhere from 8-13 years old!

5.? No riding in the front seat until 13 years old. Stay strong on this one. The recommendation is a solid one. Though your ?bigger than me? 12 year old may seem just fine in the front seat, on the inside her bones are still developing. Studies have demonstrated that the back seat is safest. Read this great post by Dr. Natasha Burgert on the whys of this important car safety rule.

Wishing you all fun and safe summer travels! What questions do you have about car seat safety?

How To Refinance Your Home Mortgage Properly

With the current state of the economy, many people are now looking to refinance their home mortgage to reduce the interest charges and fees that they are currently paying. Advertisements by home loan companies have led many consumers to believe that refinancing their mortgage is a great idea and will always save them money. While this is often true, there are still many things people need to be aware of to ensure they come out financially better off after refinancing their mortgage.

Here are some tips you should follow to refinance your mortgage properly:

Determine If Refinancing Is Right For You

The first thing you should do before refinancing your mortgage is to decide if refinancing is actually the best option for you. There are many great reasons to refinance your mortgage, such as taking equity out of your home to fund the purchase of a new car or to simply try and reduce your repayments by refinancing into a lower interest rate loan. Whatever your reason for refinancing, you should make sure you have looked at some options other than refinancing, such as car loans or separate home equity loans if you are looking to make a large purchase, to ensure you are making the best financial decision.

Understand The Interest Rate Cycle

Interest rates are constantly changing over the course of many years. To ensure your mortgage refinance is successful you need to refinance at a time when the market interest rates are below what you are currently paying on your home loan minus switching fees. If interest rates are currently higher than what you are paying now, then now is not the time to refinance. Instead, try to postpone refinancing until you can get a better rate. If interest rates are lower than what you are paying now, then you should definitely consider refinancing your loan. But remember, just because the current interest rates may be lower than what you are paying now does not mean it is automatically a good idea to refinance, as you need to also consider the often large fees associated with refinancing.

Be Aware Of All The Costs

A mortgage refinance typically comes with many fees. Some of the main ones you will likely see are: closing costs, loan application fees, and broker fees. When reviewing loan refinance offers from various lenders, it?s important that you understand all the fees that will be charged so you can properly compare different lenders. Also, you need to weigh up the interest rate savings against these costs; you may find that the costs of refinancing your mortgage outweigh the benefits, even if you can get a much cheaper interest rate on your loan! To work all this out, simply find one of the many mortgage refinance calculators that are available online, and work out how much you can save.

No Closing Costs? ? Be Weary!

A lot of companies that offer refinance loans also offer the option of no closing costs to try and bring in more customers. These deals may seem like a great choice, but you need to be careful. Often, when a company is offering no closing costs on their loans, they are adding extra hidden fees and higher interest rates to make up the difference. So, if you are offered a refinance loan without closing costs, be sure to check all the fine print to make sure you are actually saving money.

Do Your Own Research ? Avoid Brokers

Using the services of a mortgage broker is a very common way of getting a home loan or refinancing your current loan. They can provide you with a lot of information about home loan offers that are available from different lenders. But remember, mortgage brokers are paid on commission, so it is actually in their best interests to sign you up for a higher interest rate loan, because they will get a higher commission. You can still use mortgage brokers as a source of information, but once you have the information from them about several good home loan lenders make sure you contact the companies yourself to inquire about their refinancing options. Also, make sure you do your own independent research into mortgage refinance options that are available, and don?t rely entirely on what your mortgage broker says.

Conclusion

Refinancing your mortgage can be one of the biggest financial decisions you will make. Make sure you know why you are refinancing, do your homework, and don?t let other people tell you what a great deal is; come to your own conclusions by researching your options effectively!

How about you all? Have you ever refinanced your home? If so, why did you do it??

Looking back on the process, do you feel it was the right decision? Do you know how much money you saved by doing it?
