Olympic viewing: NBC critics loud on social media

NEW YORK (AP) ? In the age of social media, NBC now has millions of television critics who make their opinions known about every aspect of Olympics coverage instantly.

They've even set up their own hashtag on Twitter: (hash)nbcfail. The online complaints focused Saturday on NBC's decision to air the marquee swimming event won by American Ryan Lochte on tape delay in prime time, and Friday on the network not streaming the opening ceremony online. Sunday's critics started early: people wondering why the U.S. men's basketball team's opening game aired on a cable network while women's cycling was shown on NBC.

The conversation is so active that NBC's executive producer of the games, Jim Bell, took to Twitter to answer critics and even change the way NBC is doing something in response.

"(hash)nbcfail is filled with a lot of crying and snark and humor, but NBC can actually learn something from it," said Jeff Jarvis, a media critic who writes the Buzzmachine.com blog.

Complaints about tape delayed coverage are an evergreen with Olympics held on foreign soil. But the London Games are the first with Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites in full flower, in a mobile phone era where people carry computers that instantly deliver news in their pockets. It has amplified the impatience of viewers who want to see events on their large-screen TVs instantly and haven't been mollified by NBC's decision to stream the events live online.

James Poniewozik, Time magazine TV critic, tweeted that "NBC tape delay coverage is like the airlines: its interest is in giving you the least satisfactory service you will still come back for."

That drew a quick response from NBC's Bell: "You do know that all sports events are being streamed live right?"

"I do, indeed!" replied Poniewozik. "Have enjoyed it. Apparently a lot of folks still prefer watching it on TV."

NBC says it saves big events for prime-time airing because that is when most viewers are available to watch them and where the network makes the bulk of its advertising revenue. Since prime time on the U.S. East Coast coincides with 1 a.m. London time, there are no events to air live then. NBC representatives noted that there were 39 hours of live events Sunday on NBC and its affiliated networks.

Jonathan Wald, who produces Piers Morgan's CNN talk show and used to work at NBC, tweeted that "the medal for most Olympic whining goes to everyone who complains about what happens every four years. Tape delay."

One of those complainers, in fact, was Morgan: He tweeted his disdain Friday for NBC's decision not to make the opening ceremony available live.

The advent of Twitter makes it seems like there's a lot of unhappiness when the majority of viewers are watching NBC on tape delay and appear satisfied with it, Wald said in an interview.

NBC can point to television ratings justifying their approach. The Nielsen company said the opening ceremony drew more than 40 million people Friday, the most ever for one of those Olympic events. Saturday's first night of coverage was seen by 28.7 million, another record, beating every other first night of Olympic competition. In Beijing four years ago, 24 million watched on the corresponding night.

Jarvis said he believes NBC could satisfy fans by, for example, televising events like Lochte's race live in the afternoon and then repeating it at night. He acknowledges, though, that he's not the one who'd potentially be risking millions of dollars in advertising revenue if such a decision cut into prime-time viewing.

NBC has tried to "hold on to old media strategies in a new media world," Jarvis said. "And that's a mistake."

Some of the online complaints seem to take special glee in bashing NBC, with a few describing it like an Olympic sport of its own. Some are quite personal, like the CNN producer who tweeted Sunday: "No USA basketball in my hotel room. Why they aren't putting it on NBC's main channel is beyond me!"

Bell, in some of his back-and-forth with online critics Sunday, answered one tweeter who described herself as a St. Louis mom and complained about NBC's "Nightly News" on Saturday airing results of events that hadn't been shown on the network yet. Bell tweeted that he'd look into it, and shortly after told her that "Nightly News" would announce a "spoiler alert" to tell people to avert their eyes if they didn't want to see results.

Not everyone online is a critic. On Sunday, the U.S. Olympic sailing team tweeted that it was "by far the greatest sailing TV coverage in Olympic history."

Interview: How to Become a Stronger Event Planner

We recently spoke with Kim Sullivan, SVP, CMO of the Event Planners Association. Kim founded the Event Planners Association in 2005 as a way to help event planners and independent business owners in the entertainment industry. Described as a ?one-stop? shop, the EPA assists their members through their in-house insurance agency, law firm, marketing specialists, continuing education, networking, and safety programs. One of the most unique features of the EPA is the various industries that their members are a part of ? ranging from florists, D.J.?s and wedding planners, to inflatable operators, venue owners and corporate planners (among many more!) Today, over 4,000 members belong to the EPA (and counting!) and live and work all over the country. The EPA is currently adding chapters in Denver and Cleveland.

Kim sat down and chatted with us about the Event Planners Association, the importance of building relationships, marketing skills and current trends in event planning:

Sarah: Please tell me a little bit about your background as an event planner. Was it a career that you originally intended to pursue, or was it a career choice that just sort of happened (so to speak). In addition to event planning, have you had previous careers? If so, what were those careers, and how did they help you as an event planner?

Kim Sullivan: Event planning was not a career path I intended to venture down.? My background is in advertising and marketing.? After 20 years in that industry I took a job with an entertainment company which managed Christian musicians and authors and handled music production for events worldwide.? My collective experience left me with a desire to empower independent business owners in the event industry.? My goal is to help them gain the knowledge, skills and mindset needed to build the businesses of their dreams.

Sarah: What inspired you to create the Event Planners Association? Can you tell me a little bit about the history of the Association?

KS: The Event Planners Association was created in 2005 as a service association.? The goal was to offer much needed business services to independent business owners in the events and amusement industry.? Our in-house law firm and in-house insurance agency allowed us to provide members with the specialized contracts, liability waivers, rental agreements and other documents as well as the proper insurance they desperately needed.? Our close relationship with industry insurance carriers allows us to advocate on behalf of our members and enable us to get them what they need to be protected.? Internet marketing was the third component included with EPA membership.? Our online directory allowed members to be seen by potential clients.

The EPA quickly gained a following and has well over 4,000 members nationwide.? In the last couple of years we have had an overwhelming demand for education and networking.? Those elements are being developed now with chapters launching all over the country (soon throughout the world) and an amazing educational program in the works.

What started as a service association has evolved into a full-service support system for independent business owners involved in all aspects of the event industry.? The EPA is essentially a support system designed to empower business owners.? Our goal is to help business owners succeed!

Sarah: he Event Planners Association has chapters all over the country. Where are the different chapters located, and are there any new areas where you would like to open chapters?

KS: The Event Planners Association has launched four chapters since October 2011.? They are located in Southern California, Chicago, NYC and Washington, DC.? We are launching Cleveland and Denver next week and have Phoenix and Raleigh-Durham coming up behind those.? We have another 15 in various stages of development throughout the country and are inundated with calls and emails from event professionals around the world wanting to start or join chapters.? We interview potential leaders carefully to determine their qualifications for these leadership opportunities.

The EPA will continue to develop chapters throughout the world to provide event professionals the ability to connect and plan events worldwide.

Sarah: The Event Planners Association is known for having members in nearly every field in the event planning industry. Have any of your members planned particularly unique events, and if so, what were some of the challenges they faced? Furthermore, have you yourself planned any particularly unique/tricky events?

KS: Members of the Event Planners Association cover every aspect of the event industry, from planners of every kind to musicians, venues, caterers, promotional items, bakers, dj?s, florists, inflatable operators, tables/chairs/tent rentals and everything in-between!? EPA members plan every kind of event imaginable and have the Association and other members for reference when they get stuck with odd situations and challenges.

Sarah: One of the key factors for any successful event planner to have is great networking skills. Do you have any advice on how event planners can improve their networking skills, as well as how networking came to be one of the most important factors of the EPA?

KS: It truly takes a ?village? to execute an event and it is through the connections with others in the event industry that an event comes to fruition.? Event professionals essentially work in clusters, referring business back and forth among each other.? Business owners work with people they know, like and trust.? Good networking skills and opportunities are crucial to not only building this network, but expanding it.? An event planner must have a number of ?go-to? people they can trust to deliver on everything from venues to photographers, from florists to linens, etc.? We have seen amazing relationships develop from our networking events.

Our chapter events are designed to develop and nurture the relationships among event pros in a geographic location.? With chapters across the country, we are now seeing referrals taking place nationally as well.? The goal is to have event pros work together to build their business together.? There is certainly enough business to go around and we believe it is better to embrace and empower each other than to have an adversarial relationship.

To be an effective networker, a business owner must be willing to develop a sincere relationship with someone.? As I mentioned, we all work with people we know, like and trust.? We can provide amazing opportunities for those in our ?network circle? and vice versa.? It?s all about the relationship, performance and professionalism.? That old saying, ?you get out what you put in? definitely applies to developing a network/relationship.

Sarah: Continuing education is also another key factor in the success of any event planner. What sort of continuing education programs would you recommend to event planners, and why? Are there any continuing education programs that are specific to certain event planning industries (such as wedding planners) that you would also recommend?

KS: Education for a beginner and continuing education for seasoned pros is a must.? It?s important to invest in yourself and your business with education which will broaden your knowledge and skill base.? Education can be the difference between the success or failure of an event professional?s business.

While there are no real standards for education in this industry, there are many great programs offered via major universities, community colleges and online.? Additionally, we are working with some of the most innovative professionals in the industry in creating continuing education programs that give business owners the knowledge and skills needed to build a business.

Sarah: In your opinion, what are some of the keys to success for event planners? For instance, how important is it for event planners to utilize marketing services? Or would you recommend that event planners learn how to market their services and events on their own?

KS: Aside from the obvious skills related to event management and creativity, at the end of the day, a business owner MUST learn to market themselves.? As an entrepreneur or as an employee, you are continually selling yourself, your services and your abilities.

As a marketing professional, I always suggest business owners develop business and marketing plans (if they haven?t already).? Our blog contains information to assist with this.? I think there are a few essentials to marketing an event business: know who you are and who you are not, know your target market and how to reach them, develop a good, clean website (there are template options available or a webmaster can be hired), develop a blog and consistently create interesting and informative content designed to make you an expert in your field, and network, network, network.? These are just the very basics of marketing.? Marketing education is an area we focus on as most people are not natural marketers and need guidance to compete in this arena.

Sarah: As a prominent member of the event planning industry, are there any event planning blogs/publications that you particularly enjoy or that you would recommend to our readers?

KS: Of course, I love our blog and newsletter (laughs), but I also think there are some good publications out there. Some that I like are Special Events Magazine, Bizbash, Event Solutions and Wedlock Magazine. Pinterest is fantastic for inspiration too.

I also think planners should be taking time to get inspiration from other places such as museums, window shopping expeditions, restaurants, etc. Read magazines outside of the event planning industry ? anything that is interesting to them; fashion, design, gardening, etc. A planner must nurture those creative juices!

Sarah: And finally, as a prominent member of the event planning industry, are there any current trends in event planning that you predict will be popular in the next year? For instance, macaroons have begun to surpass cupcakes in terms of quick and delicious sweets at events (although cupcakes are still quite popular). Are there any future trends such as these that you predict?

KS: We are seeing a variety of trends and yes, we agree that macaroons are quite popular.? We are still seeing candy buffets and cake pops gain in popularity. Destination events are popular as well. What?s interesting is that trends we see on the west or east coast tend to take a bit of time to make their way throughout the country, so what we may think has become pass? is just getting attention in another part of the country. This is an opportunity for event pros to take advantage of the trends.

Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us Kim! And for more information on the Event Planners Association, you can visit EventPlannersAssociation.com!

British boxer Ogogo dedicates win to stricken mum

British middleweight boxer Anthony Ogogo dedicated his opening victory at the Olympics on Saturday to his ailing mother, laid low by a brain haemorrhage last month.

The 23-year-old clinched a 13-6 first round win over Dominican Republic opponent Junior Castillo Martinez and immediately turned his thoughts to his mother back in Britain.

"This one is for my mum," he said. "She had a brain haemorrhage six weeks ago and she is still in bed, so I don't think she would have watched the bout but I can't wait to ring her."

He added: "It's a bit of a family affair actually as one of my sisters is due to go into labour today."

Ogogo next fights world champion Ievgan Khytrov of Ukraine.

"That doesn't bother me. I've never fought him before but I have the best coach in the world and with this crowd behind me I have the beating of him," he predicted.

As impressive as he was in his division, so was American Joseph Diaz Junior in the bantamweights who showed why he is one of his team's brightest medal hopes with an impressive opening round win.

The 19-year-old, who has pledged to have a successful boxing career to help his family financially, defeated tough Ukrainian Pavlo Ishchenko 19-9.

But it was a bitter-sweet victory as he next meets top seed Lazaro Alvaro Estrada of Cuba on Wednesday.

"I felt great out there. I said to myself he is just like me, he sweats like me and he bleeds like me," said Diaz, who is coached by his father.

"It means a lot to me that my family are in the crowd.

Diaz admitted that he had sacrificed going to Friday's late-night opening ceremony because of being up first on Saturday.

"I am not here for the opening ceremony; I am here for the gold medal," said Diaz, whose country are seeking just their second gold medal in boxing since the 1996 Games.

He lost to Estrada in the quarter-finals at last year's world championships.

"I have a different gameplan to the time I fought him and lost. He is the top seed and it is a difficult task but this fight has settled my nerves and I am going to put on a good show on Wednesday."

Irishman John Joe Nevin demolished Dennis Ceylan of Denmark, his country's first Olympic boxer in 16 years, romping to a 21-6 win and threatens to go further than he did in Beijing where he failed to make the quarter-finals.

Even Nevin, whose compatriot Darren O'Neill also reached the second round in the middleweights, was taken aback by the margin of victory.

"Probably I wasn't expecting to win by as much but when I perform at my best I can beat anyone," said the 23-year-old.

"I know him (Ceylan), he's a nice lad and we're quite good friends.

"He was even talking to me in the ring in the last round, saying ?you're boxing brilliant John Joe'. It gave me a little bit of a buzz. I was talking to him to try and slow him down as well."

Improve Financial Health Through Bad Credit Debt Consolidation ...

Home
> Debt Consolidation > Improve Financial Health Through Bad Credit Debt Consolidation

People tend to fall in debts in these days of easy availability of finance and liberal use of credit cards and as a consequence are labeled as having bad credit. Primary concern of these people is to eliminate debts as early as possible. An effective and popular way of eliminating previous debts, bad credit debt consolidation makes available required finance at easy terms and conditions to pay off debts. Lenders provide loan for bad credit debt consolidation taking into account different financial backgrounds of borrowers.

Borrowers are called having bad credit for various reasons. Such borrowers may have filed for bankruptcy; they may have faced payment default cases and county court judgments. This adverse credibility is reflected in borrowers? credit score. FICO credit score ranges from 300 to 850. A bad credit is when credit score falls to 580 and below while a score of 720 and above is considered as secure for a loan offer. Though it is obvious that you have bad credit and your credit score is in negative territory, still before going for bad credit debt consolidation, it would be better if efforts are made in improving credit score. Lenders may relax terms and conditions if seriousness towards clearing debts is evident. Pay those easy debts for credit score improvements.

Bad credit debt consolidation is opted for clearing all debts in one time payment. The borrower takes loan that is at least equal to the amount of debts and pays off them either himself or through the new lender. There are many advantages of bad credit debt consolidation besides being debt free. Normally debts are of higher interest rate and therefore it results in higher monthly outgo towards installments. Since bad credit debt consolidation is done by taking a fresh lower interest rate loan, lots of money may be saved. As an alternate to monthly installments, borrowers can take a lump sum amount and clear debts in short period to save money on interest. Another method to lessen monthly installments is to pay interest only during debt consolidation loan period and pay balance at the end.

At what interest rate loan for bad credit debt consolidation can be availed will depend on repaying capacity of the borrower. Though loan for debt consolidation is generally offered at lower interest rate, still if he produces proof of sound financial standing or any source of steady income, lender may considerably reduce interest rate.

The biggest advantage of bad credit debt consolidation is that it enables borrowers in improving their credit score. Every monthly installment towards clearing off debts is recorded in credit report of the borrower.

Prefer applying online as this way you get numerous loan offers from as many lenders. You can easily pick up suitable loan package that has lower interest rate.

Bad credit debt consolidation enables you in eliminating all debts at low cost and in turn it improves credit score and credibility in the eyes of lenders. Make sure to pay monthly installments in time to avoid falling in yet another debt trap.

Administration projects $1.2T 2012 budget deficit

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House predicts this year's federal budget deficit will end up at $1.2 trillion, marking the fourth consecutive year of trillion dollar-plus deficits during President Barack Obama's administration.

The bleak figures, while expected, are sure to add fuel to the already heated presidential campaign, in which Obama's handling of the economy and the budget is a main topic. Friday's release came as the government announced that U.S. economic growth slowed to an annual rate of just 1.5 percent in the second quarter of this year, as consumers cut back sharply on spending.

The White House budget office also predicts for this year that the economy will grow at a modest 2.6 percent annual rate and that the jobless rate will average 8 percent. It forecasts modest growth of 2.6 percent next year ? down from the 3.0 percent it predicted in February ? before rising to 4.0 percent in 2014. Unemployment would remain above 7 percent through the end of 2014, registering at 7.3 percent, the report predicts.

"The economic recovery that began in 2009 will continue at a moderate rate and unemployment will gradually decline," Jeffrey Zients, the acting White House budget director said in a blog post. "The economy still faces significant headwinds," he added.

The 2012 budget year ends on Sept. 30. The White House also predicted that next year's deficit will fall just short of $1 trillion, higher than it predicted in its February budget release. The predicted deficit for 2012 actually improved by $116 billion, but some of that was because Congress didn't enact much of Obama's jobs plan.

But the White House promises deficits will drop to about 3 percent of the size of the economy by 2017, in part through $1.5 trillion in tax increases over the coming decade.

The White House report ? released Friday afternoon with the Olympics poised to distract voters for two weeks ? again trumpets Obama's longstanding approach to tackling the deficit. It includes tax increases on families earning above $250,000, already enacted "caps" on agency operating budgets and modest savings from federal benefit programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

"Since taking office, the president has worked to restore fiscal responsibility," says the OMB report.

Republicans scoffed, noting that Obama has violated his promise to wrestle the deficit in half by the end of his term.

"The president's string of broken promises on our nation's fiscal challenges weighs heavy on an anemic economy," said House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis. "The president's commitment to ever-higher government spending and his failure to deliver on his economic promises have resulted in the fourth-straight budget deficit in excess of one trillion dollars."

Under Obama's budget plan, the total U.S. debt would reach $16.2 trillion by the end of the year and soar to $25.4 trillion at the end of a decade's time.

"America can have robust economic growth ? and avert a catastrophic debt crisis ? but it requires a credible fiscal plan and the leadership necessary to achieve it," said top Senate Budget Committee Republican, Jeff Sessions of Alabama.

The government is likely to reach its borrowing cap ? the subject of a fierce fight last summer between Obama and Republicans ? late this year or early next year, which is going to require the next Congress and either Romney or Obama to act together to increase the borrowing cap. That is seen by many as an opportunity to force lawmakers to finally tackle the country's major budget problems.

Also looming is the so-called fiscal cliff, a combination of big tax increases and deep, automatic budget cuts slated to begin in January unless Obama and congressional Republicans step in to block them this fall or during a postelection session of Congress. Many economists say that if the government plunges over the fiscal cliff it could drive the economy back into recession.

Romney, for his part, offers relatively few specifics on the budget but promises to bring total government spending down to 20 percent of the U.S. economy by the end of a first term in 2016. That is roughly in line with where it was during Republican George W. Bush's presidency. Government spending now equals 24 percent of gross domestic product.

Chicago's Palmer House sued after woman's fatal fall

By Lindsay Smith, NBCChicago.com

The family of a teacher who fell to her death while sliding down a banister at Chicago's Palmer House Hilton in 2010 has filed a lawsuit against the hotel and the hosts of the event she was attending.

James and Deborah Duskey, the parents of Megan Duskey, filed a lawsuit Tuesday claiming negligence on the part of the hotel and the hosts of the ball, the?Chicago Sun-Times?reported.

See the original story on NBCChicago.com

Megan Duskey fell four stories while at the Palmer House Hilton's "Haunted Hotel Ball" in October of 2010.

Duskey, who was 23 at the time of her fatal fall,?attempted to slide down the railing?and fell four stories after losing her balance. She was already dead from head trauma when police arrived at the scene, officials said at the time.

The Palmer House Hilton said it would cooperate fully with a police investigation after the incident, and police ultimately ruled the death an accident.

Duskey was a special education teacher at Orville T.?Bright Elementary School at the time of her fall.

The lawsuit names Hilton Worldwide, the Palmer House Hilton, Surreal Chicago and Adrenaline Y2k as the defendants. It faults the hotel and event hosts for allowing the guests to overindulge in alcohol without providing adequate security.

Greece faces huge hurdles in road to reform

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Inspectors overseeing Greece's faltering financial recovery have returned to Athens to push the country back on the road to painful reform. But as Greece's economic problems pile higher, the task appears insurmountable.

Months of political uncertainty and the spread of the eurozone's crisis to major economies such as Spain and Italy are stacking pressure on Greece's new coalition government to slash spending or face the threat of an exit from the 17-country group that uses the euro.

Greece needs to cut an additional ?11.5 billion ($14 billion) in spending over the next two years to meet deficit targets and is likely to impose more pay cuts through pension and benefit caps. If it doesn't meet the deficit targets, its eurozone partners could decide to stop giving it financial aid, potentially forcing it to drop out of the eurozone.

The heads of an inspection team from the European Union, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund ? collectively known as the "troika" ? arrived this week in Athens to pick apart Greece's deficit-cutting proposals. They will return in September before making their final assessment.

Conservative Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, meanwhile, met Thursday with EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

Greeks had been promised some relief from the severe recession after the country won major debt restructuring and rescue loan deals this year, following another round of salary and benefit cuts. But that prospect has already faded.

Here are some reasons Greece is finding it increasingly difficult to meet its deficit targets.

"GREAT DEPRESSION"

Greece's economy is in its fifth year of recession, during which its economic output has dropped by about a 20 percent. Samaras has likened the period to the Great Depression in the United States in the 1930s.

On Tuesday, he delivered more bad news: The economy would contract a further 7 percent in 2012, far more than the 2.8 percent predicted last year. Unemployment, originally forecast to settle around 18 percent, has reached 24 percent.

A national association representing small businesses said it expects 67,000 more companies to go bankrupt in the next 12 months.

The economic downturn is depriving the government of much-needed revenue with which to lower its deficits.

Some blame the severity of the recession on the bailout creditors' insistence on government spending cuts as a way to lower the deficit.

In the past two years, eurozone members and the IMF have granted Greece two successive rescue loan packages worth ?100 billion ($121 billion) and ?130 billion ($158 billion) ? a higher combined amount than the country's gross domestic product ? but tied it to draconian demands for fiscal reforms to cut overspending.

The main targets include cutting the budget deficit from a runaway 15.8 percent of GDP in 2009 to around 2 percent over five years, while overhauling the public sector and services and market rules, and cutting 150,000 government jobs.

Samaras has promised to halt the recession next year and gradually bring the jobless rate to 10 percent by the end of his four-year term in 2016.

POLITICAL STALEMATE

Samaras may be lucky to still be in power in 2016, however, as political instability keeps undermining efforts to reform the economy and steer it back to health. Samaras' government is the country's fourth in eight months.

The previous three governments achieved little in terms of reform as infighting forced two national elections in May and June.

In a letter of resignation last week, the former head of Greece's key privatization agency said the time spent changing governments meant privatization revenues this year would reach ?300 million ? a tenth of the ?3 billion target.

Cutbacks agreed on under former prime minister Lucas Papademos, a former ECB vice-president who served as Greece's leader for six months until May, have yet to be implemented. Plans to lighten government payrolls by firing some civil servants have stalled.

Samaras managed to eventually form a government after his conservatives sided with the traditional rival Socialists and a small left-wing party.

The power-sharing deal was struck on a pledge to renegotiate the terms of the bailout, arguing that the economy is now too weak to impose any more austerity. Greece wants another two years to meet its targets.

EUROZONE SKEPTICISM

But Greece's rescue creditors are hesitant to give the country more time, saying it has only itself to blame for missing most of its reform targets over the past two years.

"The difficulties that Greece is currently experiencing do not stem from the (EU-IMF) program," senior ECB official Joerg Asmussen said bluntly on a visit to Athens this month. "They stem from many years of unsustainable economic policies and a reluctance to implement the necessary reforms."

EU officials believe that giving Greece the extra time to meet its deficit targets could undermined the overall rescue deal because it would require giving Greece new financial support. Many eurozone nations are increasingly reluctant to hand over more rescue money.

Greece's long list of unfulfilled commitments includes overhauling the tax system, ending delays in privatization and public land usage, scrapping dozens of state agencies, and reforming the health system and backlogged judiciary.

Samaras conceded this week that a renegotiation of Greece's bailout terms was unlikely in the short term, because the country is still in a "weak position" and because of the financial turmoil elsewhere in Europe.

Some investors worry that eurozone countries could give up on Greece and stop giving it rescue loans. Facing default, the country could potentially have to drop out of the euro bloc.

EURO EXIT

The eurozone has no provisions for a member being expelled, but the threat hangs over the country. That creates uncertainty for businesses and scares away foreign investment.

If Greece were to quit the common currency, its new currency would rapidly lose value against the euro. That would cause savings ? converted from euros ? to shrink. The cost of consumer goods ? from food to fuel ? would skyrocket as the country imports most of it.

Greek savers would rush to pull their euros out of banks before the money gets converted into the new, less valuable currency. That could cause bank runs, bringing down the financial system.

It would also deliver a severe blow to the property market, state benefits and salaries, according to predictions by bank researchers and parties backing the government coalition.

The financial catastrophe, they argue, would trigger widespread social unrest, in a country already seething with anger.

PUBLIC UNREST

Public discontent with the government's policies is one key reason why the country is struggling to recover its financial health.

It triggered Greece's political crisis last year after defections from the then-Socialist government forced it to seek partners in a six-month coalition.

Strikes and protests have died down since the start of the crisis, but the political atmosphere has become increasingly hostile.

The impact of the public anger was also evident in the latest general elections. The two parties that dominated politics for four decades, the conservative New Democracy and Socialist PASOK lost more half their support as voters fled to anti-bailout parties that accuse the political establishment of massive corruption and of allowing the country to be humiliated.

Alexis Tsipras, the left-wing opposition leader, has refused to meet with the debt inspectors, arguing their policies are leading the country to ruin.

"Very simply, this program will not work," he told parliament this week. "New cuts will cause an even worse recession in an economy already destroyed."

How do you choose the best cream?

Beware of the advertising trick!

The market is flooded with a series of anti-aging creams and lotions. Each claims to be the best. The labels show strange names promising to wipe out all the lines and spots from your face. Manufacturers leave no stone unturned to market their products with glitz and glam. They endorse celebrities to promote their creams.

This is where people get carried away.

Watching your favorite celebrity talking good about a particular cream makes you want to buy it instantly. The celebrities, with their porcelain complexion and tight skin, convince viewers with their charm that the cream in their hand is the best.

Well, they are paid to say this!

Moreover, their porcelain complexion is not the result of using the cream they endorse. In fact, they hardly use the creams they promote. A US Agriculture Department specialist has confirmed the discovery of the pests that officials say don't pose a threat to trees, despite their name ? but do tend to enter houses and buildings in huge swarms.

The Idaho Department of Agriculture issued a statement Wednesday warning that the bugs recently found in Ada and Canyon counties can prove to be a "significant nuisance" for homeowners. Elm seed bugs invade homes during the summer to escape heat, and then stick around through the winter, the department said.

The quarter-inch pests, which feed on elm tree seeds and resemble tiny, brown cockroaches with triangular back markings, do not pose a public health risk, officials said. But the bugs can have an unpleasant odor, "especially when crushed," said Pamela Juker, a spokeswoman for the Idaho Agriculture Department.

Federal authorities will take the lead role in investigating how the insects got to the U.S. and how they might spread.

"I would image they will be able to give us some indication of the possibilities," Juker said.

The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is expected to recommend ways to manage the pests.

Meanwhile, state officials are asking residents who come across the elm seed bugs outside of southwestern Idaho to collect a handful of the insects in a plastic sandwich bag and mail them to the Idaho Department of Agriculture's plant division in Boise.

The agency also is encouraging homeowners who encounter the pests to contact their local university extension office for information on how to deal with them.

"What we're trying to do at this point," Juker said, "is kind of track the bug in Idaho."

NBA free agency: A handful of players still looking for homes

To say the least, the cupboard of the NBA free-agent market has gotten pretty bare. It is not, however, entirely empty. There are still a handful of players whose situations have yet to be resolved who can be contributors next year.

Bargain bin

Carl Landry. Because he is not that tall, Landry has been overlooked during his career. And in that career, he has averaged 12.1 points in 24.9 minutes on 53.5 percent shooting.

Brandon Rush. The Golden State Warriors can match offers on Rush, and likely will do so. He shot 45.2 percent from the 3-point line last year.

Delonte West. Filling in for Jason Kidd and coming off the bench, West had a good year for the Dallas Mavericks. He is still dogged by his off-court reputation, otherwise, he?d be signed by now.

Courtney Lee. His ability to defend and capable performance as a scorer has gotten him plenty of attention since the Rockets made him an unrestricted free agent. Don?t rule out a return to Houston.

Shannon Brown. Brown is a pretty consistent combo guard off the bench, plays good defense and can make perimeter shots.

Randy Foye. Foye presents a dilemma?he is not good enough to be a starter, but he is terrible when asked to come off the bench. Other than that, he?s a keeper.

Nate Robinson. This is what happens when you spend the first few years of your career driving coaches batty?even when you actually do have a pretty good year heading into free agency, as Robinson did, no one wants you.

Big and young

Andray Blatche. He was a bad egg in the locker room and was amnestied by the Washington Wizards. But he is only 25 and has talent. He's worth a risk.

Robin Lopez. He is a restricted free agent, and even with Marcin Gortat on hand as the starter, the Phoenix Suns are likely to keep him.

Jordan Hill. Hill bolstered his stock late in the year and in the playoffs with the L.A. Lakers, and is trying to cash in. The Minnesota Timberwolves remain a viable option.

Greg Stiemsma. He?s another Timberwolves option. Stiemsma is not that young (he was a 26-year-old rookie last year), but he is big and adept shot-blocker.

What you see is what you get

Leandro Barbosa. Still a very effective (if erratic) combo guard off the bench, and would fit in nicely with a contender.

Carlos Delfino. He?s a solid pro, though he should not be a starter, as he was in Milwaukee last year.

Jonny Flynn. Flynn has never gotten back on track after suffering a hip injury in 2010. He was not particularly impressive last year, but he is four years removed from being the No. 6 pick in the draft. So someone (Cleveland?) will roll the dice.

Mickael Pietrus. He plays tough D, but he went AWOL offensively late in the year for the Celtics. Still can knock down 3s, though.

You again?

Tracy McGrady. McGrady was a versatile bench contributor for the Atlanta Hawks last year, and can probably fill that kind of role for a few more years.

Michael Redd. Overall, last year?s numbers seem to show that Redd has no business being back in the NBA. But look closer?once he got his legs back, he was actually pretty good, averaging 11.4 points on 40.5 percent 3-point shooting in 15 April games.

Derek Fisher. If not for 229 games worth of playoff experience, the 37-year-old Fisher probably would not be in the league any longer.

Gilbert Arenas. His stint in Memphis did not reinvigorate his career. But he did not torpedo the locker room, either, and that might be all he needed to do to get another shot.

July 19th, 2012

Skin cancer is far from rare, with an estimated 20% of North Americans expected to develop it at some point in their lives. And up to 2% of the population will develop melanoma, the most dangerous form of the disease.

If you have workers who spend a lot of time outdoors, hopefully they?re trying to cover their skin with clothing and are wearing hats, along with using a powerful sunscreen to protect any exposed skin.

But a new weapon in the arsenal against skin cancer may be sitting in many of your workers? medicine cabinets. Aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen may cut one?s risk for developing skin cancer by about 15%, according to new Danish research.

Researchers at University Hospital in Denmark looked at nearly 200,000 Danes, of whom 18,000 had been diagnosed with one of three types of skin cancer:

  • Basal cell carcinoma;
  • Squamous cell carcinoma; or
  • Malignant melanoma.

The researchers calculated how many people had been prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen, for conditions such as heart problems or arthritis during an eight-year period.

The patients who were taking the highest doses of such drugs for the longest time were the least likely to have been diagnosed with skin cancer.

Before taking aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on a regular basis, workers should first check with their doctor.
